This exam is meant to test your knowledge and understanding of the different types of life insurance policies, how they work, and the legal and ethical concerns about selling life insurance. A common concern people have is whether or not the test is “hard”. The test can certainly be daunting, but if you approach it with the right strategies and prepare adequately, it is completely manageable.

In this article, we will discuss what the life insurance exam is, it’s format and content, how to prepare for the exam, common challenges, and provide some tips for success.

How Hard Is The Life Insurance Exam?

As an insurance agent, I can tell you that if you want to sell any type of insurance, you have to pass an exam. In the case of life insurance, you need to pass the life insurance exam. I took it and actually failed the first time! So I do think it is a hard exam!

Only about 60% of test takers pass the exam the first time.

The life insurance exam is a test that is administered by the state insurance department to individuals who want to become licensed life insurance agents. The exam covers a wide range of topics related to life insurance, including the different types of policies, how they work, and the legal and ethical considerations involved in selling them.

The exam is typically computer-based and consists of multiple-choice questions. The length and format of the exam may vary depending on the state where you are taking it.

Preparing For The Exam

As an insurance broker, I can tell you that proper preparation is key in passing a life insurance exam. There are a variety of resources you can use, including study guides, practice tests, and online courses. It’s also important to familiarize yourself with the format and content of the exam, as well as the state-specific regulations.

It’s a good idea to start preparing several weeks before the exam date to give yourself enough time to study and practice.

Common Challenges And How To Overcome Them

As an independent insurance broker, I had to take my own insurance exams at the start of my career. Although exams can vary in content, there are similar challenges test-takers may encounter on these exams, including the life insurance exam.

The Two Most Common Challenges Include:

  • The Amount Of Information That Needs To Be Learned: There is a lot of information to remember for a life insurance exam, and it can be overwhelming, especially for those who are new to the insurance industry.
  • Time Management: It is important to have good time management skills on the insurance exam. The exam is timed, and you want to make sure you have enough time to answer each question.

To overcome this challenge, it’s important to break the material down into manageable chunks and to focus on understanding the concepts rather than memorizing facts.

Use common testing strategies like not spending too long on one question, going back to questions later, answering the ones you know first, eliminating obviously wrong answers, and searching for double negatives or contradicting answers.

I did this with great success the second time I took the exam! Just make sure to take your time with each question and if it is stumping you, skip it and mark it on the exam to eventually come back later.

Tips For Success On The Life Insurance Exam

As a licensed insurance agent, I know that a life insurance exam seems daunting and intimidating, however, I have some tips for success that can help make this process less intimidating.

  • Have A Solid Study Plan And Stick To It. A solid study plan can help you break down the information into digestible chunks and make it easier to retain. Taking practice tests can also help you identify areas where you need to focus more attention.
  • Stay calm and focused during the exam. Doing so can help you think clearly and answer the questions correctly.
  • Take your time to read and understand each question before answering. By carefully reading and understanding the question, you are less likely to make mistakes and choose incorrect answers.
  • Be sure to get a good night’s sleep and to arrive at the exam location early. Getting a good night’s rest ensures you can be focused and energized during your exam, and can help reduce stress. Arriving early ensures you have plenty of time to get checked in, settled down, or use the restroom before the exam begins.
